In 2021, it was announced that the PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima would be made into a movie. Since then, fans of the game have been eagerly waiting for any new updates about the film.
After numerous disappointing video game adaptations, studios have finally taken note of their mistakes. PlayStation is leading the charge by establishing a production company to oversee the adaptation of their popular games. This approach gives PlayStation more control over the adaptations, ensuring that their beloved games are faithfully represented on the big screen. One exciting project in the works is the Ghost of Tsushima movie, which will be directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick series. The game is set in 1274 Japan and follows the story of Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior who battles the Mongol Empire to protect his homeland of Tsushima.
Director’s Update Following The Last of Us Success
According to a recent interview on the Post Credit Podcast, Chad Stahelski discussed his role in the live-action adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima. He highlighted the positive influence of the successful adaptation of The Last of Us on how video game adaptations are perceived. Stahelski also disclosed that he is currently working on two films, one being Ghost of Tsushima, and the other being Rainbow Six, which will feature actor Michael B. Jordan.
“I hope that The Last of Us shines a further light on upcoming video game adaptions. Rainbow Six, Ghost of Tsushima I’m working on. Both are fantastic projects that I really hope come to fruition. But Ghost… it’s got an amazing story. It’s an anti-samurai samurai movie. It’s got great thematics. We have a lot of push on that and a lot of interest because Last of Us pushing that, yes, the curse of video game-to-movie is kind of lifted. It can be done. You’ve just got to give it love and attention. And Ghost, of probably all the other video game [movies] in development, I think that’s the one that’s going to land,” Stahelski said.
Everything We Know About The Ghost of Tsushima Movie
The Ghost of Tsushima movie adaptation was announced in early 2021, with Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions partnering to develop the film. Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick franchise, was selected as the director. Stahelski co-directed the first John Wick film and directed the sequels. In addition to directing, Stahelski will also serve as a producer, alongside Alex Young and Jason Spitz from 87Eleven Entertainment, as well as Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions. Peter Kang from Sucker Punch, the studio behind the game, will be an executive producer on the project.
At that time, the Ghost of Tsushima movie was one of several game adaptations in development under PlayStation Productions. This lineup included the ongoing The Last of Us television series on HBO, the movie adaptation of Uncharted featuring Tom Holland, and the in-progress projects of a Gran Turismo movie and a Twisted Metal series.
The Plot of Ghost of Tsushima
Although not much information has been revealed about the plot of the Ghost of Tsushima movie, director Chad Stahelski has hinted that the film will stay faithful to its source material. It will primarily focus on the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. However, it remains uncertain if Jin Sakai will remain the central character in the adaptation. Stahelski has expressed his interest in producing the entire movie in Japanese, with a Japanese cast, to preserve the cultural authenticity of the story and its characters. Sony has shown full support for this approach. While Akira Kurosawa serves as an obvious reference point due to the game’s black-and-white mode named after the renowned director, Stahelski has also teased that the Ghost of Tsushima movie will draw inspiration from his love for manga and anime.
Despite Stahelski’s cautious approach, there are several positive elements that support the Ghost of Tsushima movie’s potential success.
Apologies to the Ghost of Tsushima fans, as it seems that they may need to exercise a bit more patience. Although the movie is currently in development, there is no available information about the filming start date. In recent months, Chad Stahelski’s attention has been focused on the production of John Wick 4, which is now completed. This suggests that the Ghost of Tsushima movie could potentially see a release in the near future, possibly sometime in 2024.
